Is Masturbation a sin? Is masturbation wrong? Can I be a Christian and masturbate? Can Christians masturbate? Is masturbating a sin? These are the questions I get asked when I speak on the topic of sex and pornography. How do we address this coming from a Christian Worldview? We need to get better in the church world addressing these tough conversation I think it is imperative that we address masturbation as it is an issue that not only adults (men and women) but our children (again men and women) need to understand. We are ALL struggling with topics like masturbation, pornography, sex, etc in our modern sexualized culture today. This discussion is actually part of a larger umbrella which is how we get a Christian Worldview of healthy sexuality or what I often call a Christian sexual ethic. How you view, masturbation is actually under a greater context of how you consider all topics from sex, pornography, dating, and also masturbation amongst others. *As Christians we can have differing opinions on issues and still be brothers and sisters in Christ. If we choose to land on the masturbation is ok as long as we do not lust we must take into consideration these thoughts: 1. What type of intimacy is gained by being on your own and masturbating? 2. Does masturbation perpetuate the lie that sex is something only about me? 3. Does it increase a desire for self-gratification? 4. If I am married and I desire this why are you not desiring intimacy with your spouse instead of by yourself? 5. What is the reason you are masturbating? Lonely, stressed, bored, pain, anxious, depressed, or others? 6. If this becomes an addiction how will this affect everyone 7. Does the concept of porn-induced erectile dysfunction also include masturbation without porn or lustful thoughts? 8. Does this create isolation in my life? 9. Can you actually masturbate without lusting? 10. Are you becoming obsessed with masturbation? No matter where we land on the issue of masturbation we will: 1. We aim for a happy, sexually fulfilling marriage. 2. We will work hard to grow in our faith through daily spiritual disciplines. 3. We will aim to not set ourselves up for online sexual temptation by having internet filters 4. We will have accountability for what we watch online. 5. We will not put sexualized music, TV, and movies into our life 6. When we do fail we will try and figure out if there were any factors that could have set us up for failure? 7. We will make sure we deal with unresolved traumas, past experiences, and pain in our life that might make us look for some relief from these pains in pornography/masturbation 8. If we fail we will not make this failure spiral into other failures. 9. Less time alone.
