The reason I caught these lizards today besides the fact I enjoy handling them is both lizards were hanging dangerously close to the picnic area where two young girls were playing, I was out spearfishing and noticed one of these lizards closing in towards the young girls enjoying there picnic, so I jumped out of the ocean and chased the first one down. these AWESOME lizards can be dangerous around young kids with food in there hands. I’ve witnessed these lizards chase a child for his sausage sizzle, luckily I was there to intervene by chasing after and catching the monitor before he caught the young boy. ITS NOT THE ANIMALS FAULT BUT OURS. People leaving food scraps around lures these AWESOME goannas into picnic areas, these goannas have no real fear of people in remote places like this. A small child holding a sandwhich is an easy target, it’s not trying to eat the child just wants a bite of the sandwhich is all. When I catch each lizard and release it, it becomes more warey of people, these are INTELLIGENT animals. Both an AWESOME predator and opportunistic feeder on carion (dead rotting animals) a bite from this lizard can slice through a major artery, resulting in death. The bacteria in the mouth can cause serious infection if not treated. I handle these AWESOME monitors with THE UP MOST RESPECT and any injury I sustain is COMPLETELY MY FAULT NEVER THE ANIMALS🦎👍
