After 34 years, Julia surprises her partner, Cathy, with a proposal. She first proposed (and Cathy accepted) in 1980, before realizing gay marriage was illegal and that they weren't ready to share their relationship with their friends and family. As they became more comfortable with their relationship (helped by the example of Ellen DeGeneres) they planned to marry two more times--only to have political circumstances intervene. The 2013 Supreme Court decision at last gave them the right to marry, but the romance was missing. Julia plans to rectify that during the family Christmas party and has managed to keep it a secret. Even the guests--with a few out-of-town exceptions--are unaware of what's happening until Julia hands out candles and 34 roses while Cathy is out of the room.
