This video teaches you how to form and produce the diphthong /eɪ/. Diphthongs are also called double vowel sounds because they are a combination of two monophthongs (= two single vowel sounds). In the diphthong /eɪ/ the close-mid front unrounded vowel sound /e/ combines with the near-close front unrounded vowel /ɪ/. We glide from one sound to the next in smooth movement to form a new sound: the diphthong /eɪ/. This diphthong is a very common sound in English and you can find it in many words. For example, make, they, away, train, break and eight. However, as you can see, unfortunately /eɪ/ is not always spelt in the same way. Instead, there are many different spelling patterns!
