Eugene, a Jewish boy, is entering into his adolescence. His family consists of his father Jack, mother Kate, and brother Stanley. Kate's younger sister, Blanche, whose husband passed away, is staying with them with her two daughters. Eugene dreams of being a baseball player or a writer, and writes a secret diary every day. Kate is working hard, but her life is difficult, and she is on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Called by a Broadway director, Eugene's cousin Nora decides she's going to be an actress, while Laurie is sick and just reads books.
