The Lucy Faithfull Foundation is the only UK-wide charity dedicated solely to preventing child sexual abuse. In 2015, we identified a need for a campaign that targeted online abuse at the source, showing people the damaging consequences of viewing indecent images of children, and encouraging anyone worried about their own online behaviour to seek help. The Stop It Now! deterrence campaign: The Lucy Faithfull Foundation conducted in-depth research with offenders to inform and shape this campaign and from this the Stop It Now! deterrence campaign was created. Since its inception, the campaign has included: - Six powerful films, viewed over 20 million times - Digital ads, which reached the right people at the right time - Hard-hitting PR, which has secured over 1,100 pieces of national and regional coverage - Extensive partner engagement across media, law enforcement, and the public sector The impact: Since it began, the number of calls to the Stop It Now! helpline from people worried about their behaviour who haven’t been arrested has more than doubled. And in 2019 to 2020 alone, visits to the website increased by 158%. The majority of online survey respondents and helpline callers who hadn’t been arrested reported a change in awareness of the consequences of offending. And almost half reported that they had taken action because of the campaign, including curbing their use of the internet, speaking to a professional such as a GP, and stopping viewing indecent images of children altogether.
